Dinner fatigue-that feeling of having to decide what the heck you are going to make your family for dinner tonight. The kids are melting down, you’re exhausted, and the house looks like a bomb of toys and laundry went off. I have suffered from this common condition many times as a parent but I am here to tell you that I can help solve this exhausting problem! You don’t need a fancy complicated gourmet recipe, you don’t need to order takeout, and you definitely don’t need to make chicken nuggets and fruit for you toddler again for dinner! This post has a ton of simple, no recipe, low ingredient dinner ideas that you can make tonight with ingredients you most likely have on hand already.

Why “no-recipe” dinners work

We all know how exhausting making a full fledged dinner is for your family especially after a long day of work, parenting, or being a human adult in this crazy overstimulating world. In addition to checking out my post on How to Create a Calmer Home with Multiple Young Children, I’m going to give you some tips on how to make family dinner time easier and less exhausting with a curated list of food pairings. The actual cooking is rarely the problem. Rather, it’s the meal planning, grocery list creation, prep work, day of mental tasks (did I remember to thaw the frozen chicken?) that add so much extra energy and time to the act of cooking dinner. Add kids to this mix and your dinner feels like a Herculean task some nights.

“No-recipe” dinners work because they are versatile and typically require little prep. They are meant to be adjusted to what you currently have on hand and to how much time or energy you have to cook. If Thursday nights are your busy nights you probably want a super simple recipe with easy cleanup. This post outlines easy family meals that are simple, affordable, and can be tailored to your family’s preferences!

How this works with your family

Remember the entire goal of no recipe meals is to take away yet another decision you have to make about what recipe is for dinner and how complicated it is going to be! Family dinner time first and foremost is about connection and communication with your family. Ask everyone to share their high/low points of the day. Tell silly stories. Talk about exciting upcoming plans. You do not need to serve a 4 course gourmet meal to have a successful family dinner. Sitting together around a table and connecting is our goal.

You’ve got this!

I know how stressful meal planning, especially dinner time can be. Put both hands on your heart and remind yourself that you are doing a great job and that caregiving is HARD. Take some pressure off of the idea that you need to make complicated from scratch multi ingredient meals every night. Your kids want you, especially a relaxed and calm version of you.
